The latest Phillies injury updates

  • Ranger Suarez (Lower back pain)
  • Status: 15-day injury list
  • Suárez was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 27 due to lower back pain, retroactive to July 24.
  • He is making progress, but don’t expect him to return during the Marlins/Nationals home opener. He threw 36 pitches in a two-inning simulated game in Arizona on Thursday, August 8, according to MLB.comThe Phillies would still like to see him take live batting practice — which could happen on Sunday, August 11 — and possibly take a short rehab period. That will likely delay his permanent return to the rotation until the Braves’ road game against the Royals. (Last updated by Destiny Lugardo on August 9)
  • Austin Hays (Sprain of the left thigh)
  • Status: 10-day injured list
  • Hays was taken out of Wednesday’s game against the Dodgers in the third inning after he apparently strained his hamstring while running down the first base line.
  • The Phillies have placed Hays on the 10-day injured list with a left thigh injury, retroactive to August 8. Hays told Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia that his strain was “very mild.” It doesn’t sound like he will be out much longer than 10 days. (Last updated by Tim Kelly on August 9)
  • Taijuan Walker (Inflammation of the right index finger)
  • Status: 15-day injury list; Probably back on August 13 against the Marlins
  • Walker made his second rehab appearance for Double-A Reading on Wednesday, August 7. He pitched five innings and held the Akron RubberDucks to two hits and one run. Walker threw 60 pitches in total, 40 of which were strikes. He struck out three batters and allowed no walks. It appears that Walker is on track to return to the rotation on August 13 against the Marlins, according to ^ “Mr. McKinney, MLB.com”. (Last updated by Destiny Lugardo on August 9)
  • Dylan Covey (Overload of the right shoulder)
  • Status: 60-day injured list; currently in rehab
  • Since August 9, Covey has made three rehab appearances for Single-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading. His last appearance was on August 4, when he allowed one earned run in three innings for Reading against Hartford. (Last updated by Destiny Lugardo on August 9)
  • Spencer Turnbull (Load on the right latissimus)
  • Status: 15 days on the injured list, 6-8 weeks out
  • Turnbull will be out until August with a strained right latissimus dorsi. He was removed from his start against the Detroit Tigers on June 26 after three innings because of right shoulder soreness. After the game, he expressed optimism about his condition to reporters in Detroit, but tests revealed a more serious injury.
  • Accordingly NBC Sports PhiladelphiaAccording to Corey Seidman, the Phillies plan to use Turnbull when he returns from the bullpen, quoting manager Rob Thomson as saying, “We’ll use him as much as we can, but it’s going to be difficult to get him to 100 pitches.”
  • As for Turnbull’s current rehab progress, Seidman says the plan is for Turnbull to “get back on the mound this week.” (Last updated by Tim Kelly on August 7)
  • Luis Ortiz (Tommy John operation)
  • Status: 15-day injury list
  • Ortiz underwent successful Tommy John surgery on July 11. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 12)
  • Andrew Painter (Tommy John operation)
  • Status: 60-day minor league injured list
  • The most promising player in the Phillies’ minor league system underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023.

Thomson did not rule out the 21-year-old pitching in simulated games — which take place under controlled conditions — before the end of the year. However, he does not believe he will pitch for an affiliated team at some point in 2024. (Updated by Tim Kelly on June 29)
