Lake Mary wins opening game of 2024 Little League World Series 2-1: Match report

The Lake Mary Little League begins its run in the 2024 Little League World Series tonight against the team from Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The Florida team represents the Southeastern United States region and won all four of its games in the regional tournament by a combined score of 35-8. The South Dakota team, on the other hand, went 4-1 in the Midwest Regional tournament and avenged its only loss by defeating Missouri 6-1 to win the title.

The winner will play Puyallup, Washington, on Friday, while the loser will face either Staten Island, New York, or Henderson, Nevada, in an elimination game on Saturday. The LLWS runs through August 25, when the winners from the U.S. and international groups will face off in the finals.

First inning

19:10: Ryan Henry of South Dakota throws the first pitch and gets a strike.

19:13: After Chase Anderson opened the game with a single to right field, South Dakota pitcher Ryan Henry struck out JJ Feliciano and forced an inning-ending lineout on a double play by DeMarcos Mieses.

19:21: Chase Anderson was nominated for the SportsCenter Top 10 when he caught the ball over his shoulder and one-handed in shallow center to end the inning. South Dakota went down in order with JJ Feliciano striking out a batter.

Second inning

19:29: Florida left a runner standing for the second straight inning. Landon Bono got over the wall with a leadoff single to center, but South Dakota’s Ryan Henry retired the next three batters.

19:35: While his father, Daniel, was being interviewed by ESPN’s Julie Foudy, JJ Feliciano struck out two South Dakota batters to end a scoreless second inning. The right-hander had 13 Ks in seven innings during the Southeast Regional contest.

Third inning

19:40: Teraj Alexander hit a double to deep right-center, but Luis Calo was thrown home trying to score from first base. Florida has four hits in the game, but the score remains 0-0 with one out in the third.

19:43: South Dakota escaped upset when Ryan Henry struck out Lathan Norton with a runner on third base, ending the inning.

19:48: JJ Feliciano retired South Dakota’s first nine batters in a row, collecting five strikeouts and hitting a 75 mph fastball. Florida and South Dakota are tied 0-0.

Fourth inning

19:54: Florida went down in order for the first time in the game. South Dakota pitcher Ryan Henry had four hits and four strikeouts on the mound.

19:58: South Dakota got its first runner on base. Griff Sommer worked a leadoff walk against JJ Feliciano, who needed just 29 pitches to get through the first three innings.

20:03: The bases are loaded for South Dakota. Tait Ready made it 0-2 and drew a walk, and Kennyel Flores hit a perfect bunt single.

20:08: Ryan Henry added his own contribution, scoring the game’s first run with an infield single behind the baseline at second base, giving South Dakota a 1-0 lead with two outs.

20:11: South Dakota sent seven batters to the plate and forced Florida pitcher JJ Feliciano to walk 29 pitches in the fourth inning. Feliciano struck out two strikeouts and limited the damage to a single run by forcing Luke Fenton to single to left. Florida trails 1-0 at the start of the fifth inning.

Fifth inning

20:18: Florida is in a position to tie the score. Landon Bono and Garrett Rohozan started the inning with a walk, and Jacob Bibeau hit a single into shallow center. Like South Dakota in the previous inning, Florida loaded the bases with one out.

20:20: Florida ties the score at 1-1 with a hard-hit single to the middle by Liam Morrisey. The bases are still full with one out.

20:22: Garrett Rohozan scored the first run for Florida on a sacrifice fly from Luis Calo. Jacob Bibaud was singled at home to end the threat. Florida leads 2-1 against South Dakota entering the second half of the fifth inning.

20:35: Florida takes a 2-1 lead into the final inning. JJ Feliciano has nine strikeouts and added two more in the fifth. He left two South Dakota runners in scoring position when Sully Krueger’s softliner was caught at second base.

Sixth inning

20:42: South Dakota again put up a strong defensive effort to stop Florida’s aggressiveness on the basepaths. Lathan Norton hit a single to left, but Christopher Chikodroff was picked off at third base. Florida leads 2-1 and needs three more outs to take the win.

20:47: JJ Feliciano struck out South Dakota’s first two batters in the sixth inning, but was taken out of the game after exceeding the 85-pitch limit. He finished with 11 Ks in 5⅔ innings, allowing two hits, three walks and one earned run.

20:52: Luis Calo saved with one out, striking out Kennyel Flores to secure Florida’s 2-1 victory over South Dakota. The Southeast Region teams improved their record against their Midwestern opponents to 11-0. JJ Feliciano earned the win with 11 strikeouts in 5⅔ innings.

Florida will next face Northwestern representatives from Puyallup, Washington, on Friday at 7 p.m.

Has Florida ever won the Little League World Series?

Lake Mary is making its first appearance in the Little League World Series. They are the 24th team from Florida to travel to Williamsport, and although eight teams from the Sunshine State have finished second, no team from Florida has ever won the championship.

The Lake Mary Little League team is led by DJ Mieses, who hit two home runs and posted a batting average of .889 in the Southeast Regional tournament. JJ Feliciano had 13 strikeouts en route to Williamsport.

Weather update for Williamsport: Is it raining at LLWS?

There was some rain in Williamsport on Wednesday afternoon, causing a delay in the New Hampshire-Hawaii game at Lamade Stadium, where Florida and South Dakota are scheduled to play tonight. The game at nearby Volunteer Stadium between Chinese Taipei and Canada, which was scheduled to start at 5 p.m., started around 5:30 p.m.

The Florida-South Dakota start is still scheduled for 7 p.m., but Weather.com indicates that brief rain showers could return within an hour.
