Lake Mary All-Stars lose to Texas in first Little League World Series loss

Lake Mary All-Stars lose to Texas in first Little League World Series loss

WILLIAMSPORT, Penn. – Lake Mary lost on Monday to Boerne, Texas with a score of 4-1 at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

This was the team’s first loss since participating in the World Series, as Lake Mary triumphed in games against Sioux Falls and Puyallup last week.

However, the tournament is a double knockout tournament, meaning teams must lose twice before they are out of contention. That means Lake Mary is still in contention for now.

Lake Mary head coach Jonathan Anderson spoke to News 6 about how the team is dealing with its first loss not only of this tournament, but of the entire summer.

“I haven’t been able to talk to them in depth about (the loss), but they’re doing well,” Anderson said after the game. “We’ve played three days in a row now, so it’s time to bounce back.”

Despite the loss, Anderson insisted that it was not over for the Lake Mary team.

“You see all these teams in the losers bracket suddenly wake up and start hitting. That’s what I’m looking for,” Anderson said. “I’m looking for those bats to come to life and we’ll be ready to go when we get back to the U.S. Championship game.”

In Monday’s game, Lake Mary was led by DJ Mises, who scored the team’s run with an RBI double in the top of the first inning.

But Texas starting pitcher Julian Hurst was as good as it gets, throwing a complete game and striking out 10 Lake Mary batters. After the first inning, the 5-foot-11, 12-year-old allowed just one hit the rest of the game.

“We found a really good kid in Julian Hurst,” Anderson said. “He kept us in check. He did a really good job and they didn’t really see what he had in his hand.”

When a team loses at the Little League World Series, the head coach is the only one who attends the postgame press conference, so News 6’s Justin Warmoth asked Julian’s teammate Jett Matthews what it’s like to compete against him.

“I’m not going to lie, it’s kind of scary,” the shortstop said. “He throws super fast and his curveball is nasty. It’s kind of a weird (arm position).”

“He’s got a good hitting arm,” added Texas head coach Justin Newson. “All of our hitters have trouble with him. Florida isn’t the only one. I mean, during the Little League season, he struck out everybody.”

While the team’s winning streak may be over, their stay in Williamsport is far from over. The Lake Mary All-Stars will next face Staten Island, New York in an elimination game on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Twenty teams compete in the Little League World Series: ten regional champions from the USA and ten international champions from around the world.
