MONROE — Monroe’s annual Labor Day Parade and Festival will begin at noon Saturday with a parade through downtown Monroe. The festival will then take place in St. Mary’s Park and continue until 10 p.m. Some streets will be closed Saturday.

Labor Day celebrations in Monroe have been taking place for decades before the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year marked the first time the activities have taken place since the pandemic began. The Monroe/Lenawee Central Labor Council of the AFL-CIO is the organizer of the events.

“Typically, about 1,500 people participate in the parade and a few hundred more come to the festival afterward,” says Collin Keehn, AFL-CIO social services liaison and employee at the United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties.

Where does the parade start?

The Labor Day Parade begins at 12:00 p.m. in the Department of Public Services yard on Jones Avenue, then travels west on Jones Avenue, north on Monroe Street, and ends at St. Mary’s Park.

Monroe Street will be closed to traffic during the parade.

This year’s grand marshal is Laura Dickerson, regional director of UAW 1A, Keehn said.

West Elm Avenue will be closed to all traffic between Borgess Avenue and Monroe Street from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Traffic on Elm Avenue will be detoured via Godfroy, Bogress and Noble Avenues.
