Kit Harington on the reasons why there was no “Snow” spinoff

Kit Harington discusses why “Snow,” the sequel to Game of Thrones starring Jon Snow that he developed, never became a reality.

Kit Harington can accept or reject it as long as it is the continuation of his signature character Jon Snow from game of Thrones. It is a huge challenge for any actor to take the responsibility of such an epic franchise on his shoulders, even if he is not doing it alone with co-stars like Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) among many others who have heard the criticism of the eighth and final season. While promoting his current HBO series, Industry, currently in its third season, Harington spoke with GQ about a variety of things, including humility and gratitude for what the George R.R. Martin franchise has done for him and how he may have developed cold feet that may have stopped his sequel spinoff Snow from becoming reality.

Game of Thrones: Kit Harington on protecting Jon Snow’s legacy

When it comes to what he has achieved and the fame he has had in all eight seasons of David Benioff And Dan Weiss Series: “Yeah. There’s a lot of baggage that comes with it, and I think that was part of the problem,” Harington said. “In some ways, you have to completely detach yourself from that previous thing, and we’re only a few years after that. The role will always be such a significant factor in my life. It may very well be the biggest, most important work I do. I met my wife in it. I have kids from it. Have some lifelong friends from it. I get recognized on the street because of it. (But) it also went against what I’m trying to do, which is distance myself from (the show). If I’m still in it, (it would be) very hard to ask people to see you as something else. And it’s kind of essential to my job that people come and see me and not Jon Snow.”

As for why “Snow” was shelved, “I don’t really want to say,” Harington said. “Because it sets a whole thing in motion. What I can tell you is that HBO came to me and said, ‘Would you consider this?’ My first reaction was no, and then I thought it could be an interesting and important story about the soldier after the war. I felt like maybe there was something left to say and a story to tell, in a pretty limited way. We spent a couple of years developing it back and forth. And it just didn’t… nothing excited us enough. In the end, I kind of pulled back and said, ‘I think if we keep pushing this and developing it, something might come out of it that’s not good. And that’s the last thing we all want.'”

Until then, we just have to wait until Martin, HBO and Harington give the green light for Jon Snow’s new adventures with the Wildlings (see the entire interview). New episodes of industry airs Sundays on HBO and is available to stream on Max.
