Kirkwood hosts a Community Day instead of the annual fair

KIRKWOOD (WBNG) – Every summer, Kirkwood hosts an annual event.

In recent years this has usually been a fun fair, but in 2024 the city decided to try something different and organize a community day instead.

“Our previous fair company would not be participating this year, so it was difficult to find another vendor for our company,” said John Finch, Kirkwood City Planning Commissioner.

Community Day on Sunday featured a car show, the Little Miss Kirkwood beauty pageant, a dog show and much more.

“It’s nice to be able to give back to them and offer them all these free activities,” said Sandy Wasson, a member of the Kirkwood Fair Board and City Council. “It’s nice to see them happy and watch the kids.”

Wasson, who grew up in Kirkwood, returned to her hometown after several years in Binghamton.

“There is so much to offer here. There are a lot of nice people, good people, it’s a safe, caring community,” she added.

Although rain is common in the Southern Tier this summer, Sunday was nearly perfect with partly cloudy skies.

“Beautiful day. I mean, there are over 200 cars here for the car show, beautiful cars, and it’s just a fantastic day, nice breeze down here by the river,” Finch said.

The fun day for the whole family ended at 5 p.m. with a musical performance by The Gents.
