Kayce and Monica Dutton survive the second half of season 5

Kayce and Monica Dutton survive the second half of season 5

At the end of his three-day vision quest in the season four finale of “Yellowstone,” Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) told his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille), “I have seen our end.”

The wayward son of John Dutton (Kevin Costner) may have foreseen the tragedy that unfolded in the first half of the fifth season of “Yellowstone”: a car accident that Monica and her son Tate (Brecken Merrill) survived, but which resulted in the death of their unborn child, who would be named John after his grandfather.

Still, Kayce and Monica have moved on from the loss and remain the soft-spoken couple we’re all rooting for in the second half of the final season of “Yellowstone,” which premieres Nov. 10 (8 EST/PST) on the Paramount Network. The two can be seen with their son Tate (Brecken Merrill) in the second episode of our “Yellowstone” first-look week on USA TODAY.

Kayce had returned to running the Yellowstone Ranch at the beginning of season 5 (in November 2022) when his father entered politics and took over the governorship of Montana. But what turn events will take and how Costner will be written out of “Yellowstone” in the second half is a closely guarded secret in the final episodes of the successful modern western.

Why is Kevin Costner leaving “Yellowstone”?

Grimes, who is pursuing a budding country music career of his own, could understand Costner’s decision to leave “Yellowstone” after a disagreement that was exacerbated by his decision to create, direct and star in the Western film series “Horizon: An American Saga,” the second installment of which was delayed after the first was only moderately successful at the box office.

“Whatever happened there, it’s unfortunate if it changed anything about how ‘Yellowstone’ was going to turn out,” Grimes told The Independent in April. “I know he was busy with his films, which were like passion projects. At a certain point, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do, man. You’ve got to do what you love.”

Asbille paid tribute during the final days of filming “Yellowstone” by posting a photo on Instagram last week showing the famous ranch in her rearview camera.

“To our entire Y family, past and present, I love you forever,” Asbille wrote.

In the last episode of “Yellowstone”, Kayce and Monica are joined by the other power couple: Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) and the fiery Dutton daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly).
