Kanye West causes controversy by playing songs by Diddy and R. Kelly during his DJ set

According to social media updates from producer Mike Hector, Kanye West made some bold choices during his recent DJ set, playing tracks by Diddy and R. Kelly back to back.

At the event, which took place over the weekend, West performed songs by numerous artists, including Prince, Eurythmics, The Eagles and JAY-Z.

Hector, who was present at the event, posted on X (formerly Twitter): “I’m at this party and Kanye is DJing. He played two Diddy songs and then right after that he played an R. Kelly song. This n***a don’t give a f***.”

West’s decision to include R. Kelly in his set is in line with his previous support of the art of controversial figures.

In 2019, during an appearance at a Sunday service, West discussed the idea of separating art from the artist, arguing that some artists’ work should still be honored despite their erratic behavior.

In his single “Carnival,” he also referenced R. Kelly and Diddy, rapping: “If somebody pissed off, gotta make them drink the urine / Now I’m Ye-Kelly, bitch, now I’m Bill Cosby, bitch / Now I’m Puff Daddy rich, that’s #MeToo, I’m rich.”

The rapper has been criticized for his stance on controversial figures, including an infamous 2022 interview on Drink Champs in which he referred to Diddy as “Fed.”

West’s latest DJ set is sure to spark further debate about his support of artists with problematic pasts.
