Kacey Musgraves sings “Too Good to Be True” on “Austin City Limits”

Kacey Musgraves has set the bar high for the 50th anniversary season of Austin City Limits. The long-running television show returns this fall with a new slate of performances from both veteran artists and newcomers—and Musgraves is first on the list. The musician’s hour-long set will premiere on PBS on September 28 and includes a tender live performance of her Deeper well “Too good to be true.”

Musgraves begins the performance by thanking the lively audience for their support during the previous song. But when she starts strumming her guitar and singing “Too Good to Be True,” the hall falls silent. Accompanied by a seven-piece band, the singer weaves gentle melodies around a sweet story about falling in love freely.

“It’s nice to be back here in Texas,” Musgraves said as she took the stage. “It’s a great honor to open ACL’s 50th season.” The performance was recorded in early June and was her third appearance in the last decade. She was accompanied by Clif Johnson and John Whitt Jr. on keys, Drew Taubenfeld on guitar and pedal steel, Jon Sosin and Ben Jaffe on guitar and backing vocals, Tarron Crayton on bass and Rob Humphreys on drums.

Musgraves managed to pack 17 songs into her set, starting with “Cardinal” and ending with 2021’s “Easier Said.” Pursued by fateThere were a few Golden Hour also selected pieces, including “Rainbow”, “High Horse” and “Slow Burn”.

After the premiere of Musgraves’ performance Austin city limits will have 14 weekly airings. The first batch of these episodes will feature Gary Clark Jr., Black Pumas, Maggie Rogers, Gracie Abrams, Jacob Collier, Nickel Creek, Brittany Howard, Jelly Roll, the War and Treaty, Chris Stapleton and Juanes. Additional cast members for the second half of the season will be announced at a later date.
