The long-legged birds will nest in the yard for one to two days before moving on. American Legion Meeting, August 15

The American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary will meet on Thursday evening, August 15th at 6 p.m. at the Snow Hill building. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served prior to the meeting. All members and their spouses are welcome and invited to attend.

Smithville Farm Bureau

The DeKalb Co. Farm Bureau Annual Meeting will be held on August 17, 2024 from 5-7 p.m. at the DeKalb Co. Complex. Chelsea Rose, Exc. Director of the TN FFA Foundation, will be the guest speaker. All Farm Bureau members are welcome to attend.

DeKalb County Schools

The DeKalb County school calendar for 2024-25 is as follows:

Students and teachers in DeKalb County have a full week of fall break from October 14-18, Thanksgiving from November 25-29, and spring break from March 24-28, as well as a two-week winter break over Christmas from December 23 to January 3. December 20 is a shortened day (7:45 a.m.-9:15 a.m.). Students return to school after Christmas break on January 6, 2025. Schools will also be closed on Labor Day (September 2), Dr. Martin Luther King Day (January 20), President’s Day (February 17), Good Friday, April 18, and Monday, April 21. The last day of school is May 23, 2025 (shortened 7:45 a.m.-9:15 a.m.). May 22 is an administrative day.

Certificates will be issued at all schools on October 8, December 20, January 9, March 18 and May 23.

On October 10 and March 20, parent-teacher meetings will take place at all schools from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Veteran Service Officer Ready to Help

Are you a veteran who needs help? DeKalb County has a Veterans Service Officer to help you not only file claims but also talk about your service. Officer Erica Degni is located on the ground floor of the DeKalb County Courthouse and is ready to offer help. Hunter Education Classroom, August 17

All participants in this event must be 9 years old by Saturday, August 17, 2024. The course is offered free to all interested regardless of age, however you must be at least nine years old to become a certified hunter education graduate. This is a one-day event on Saturday, August 17, 2024 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the DeKalb County Fire Department, 782 King Ridge Rd, Dowelltown, TN 37059. Direction will be given by Tony Cross. You must cancel your registration before August 17, 2024. Per state and federal law, your social security number is required. If you would like to enroll in this course but have never received a social security number, please call 615-781-6538 for assistance.

The Warren County Genealogical and Historical Association

The program will be Dr. Michael Bradley, Farewell Speeches of the Civil War. Plan to attend our meeting on August 17, 2024. Visitors are welcome! Start time is 2 p.m. The meeting will be at 201 Locust Street, McMinnville, TN 37110.

FCE meeting

The FCE meets on the second Tuesday of every month. The meeting is held at 10 a.m. in the DeKalb County Complex in the Motlow Conference Room. Everyone is welcome to attend.

God’s Grace Ministry Fall Festival, August 17

The Fall Festival will be held on August 17, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Green Brook Park. Admission is free. There will be a bouncy castle, food trucks, a market, arts and crafts and more.

UCHRA Raw Material Distribution, August 22

The Upper Cumberland Human Resource (UCHRA) will be conducting a commodity distribution for DeKalb County on Thursday, August 22, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the DeKalb County UCHRA office. Registration will be available at the distribution location.

Annual Overdose Awareness Day, August 24

Join us for our annual Overdose Awareness Day on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until dusk in Greenbrook Park at the Large Pavilion. There will be overdose reversal training, dinner and refreshments, music, a skit performance, a vigil walk, recovery testimonies and community tables with resources and more.
