Judge decides whether Bob Good must pay $97,000 for recount costs

Judge decides whether Bob Good must pay ,000 for recount costs

Congressman Bob Good lost the recount of the Republican primary in the 5th Congressional District and had to pay the costs, but now he is arguing with some of the local registrars over the amount of the costs.

On Wednesday, a Goochland County judge will decide who is responsible for paying the 24 municipalities for the recount of votes in the 5th Congressional District. The total cost of the recount is $97,000.

According to court officials in Goochland County, they have also subpoenaed five of the 25 precincts to produce the votes they found during the recount earlier this month. Halifax County, Danville and Amherst County are three of the municipalities that will appear in court.

According to court documents, Good denies having to pay for travel expenses, meals, salaries and support for voting machines at these registrars.

Peggy Petty of the Danville Registrar’s Office said she will drive to Goochland County to present the one vote found for Good in the recount.

She also mentioned that Good had to pay because he lost by over half a percent, but the final word was with the judge.

“He will either decide in Mr. Good’s favor to disallow some of the expenses or order payment of the amount submitted by all of us,” Petty said.

The Amherst County Registrar’s Office also confirmed it will be there tomorrow to present ten incorrectly submitted votes. Halifax County has not yet confirmed its attendance.

Goochland County Court officials told me they could not provide any further information about Wednesday’s hearings.

I contacted Good’s attorney to learn more but did not hear back. I also contacted state Sen. John McGuire, who defeated Good in the primary. McGuire said he hopes Good keeps his word.

“I haven’t really thought about it much, but I would say I really hope my opponent doesn’t rip off taxpayers with costs he promised to cover,” Senator McGuire said.

The hearing in both cases is scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m.
