Jamie Oliver’s “epic” egg in the hole is prepared in 15 minutes and requires only 4 ingredients

“If you need a pick-me-up, this one-pan wonder is just what you need,” says Jamie Oliver.

“We’re talking crispy, golden brown sausage, soft steamed bagel, nice egg and melted cheese.”

This delicious breakfast (or brunch) is the ideal treat for a Sunday morning – there’s no doubt about that, whether you follow Jamie Oliver’s bizarre method or opt for a regular toasted sandwich.

“Yes, it’s a bit eccentric, but it also tastes absolutely delicious,” promised Jamie Oliver, admitting that his recipe might seem a bit strange.

Here’s how to conjure up Jamie Oliver’s epic breakfast egg in a hole in just 15 minutes.

Egg breakfast

Ingredients

  • A bagel
  • A sausage
  • An egg
  • 30 g cheddar cheese
  • Tomato ketchup and/or brown sauce to serve (optional)

Proceedings

Use your thumbs to press the center hole of the bagel to the size of an egg yolk.

Squeeze the sausage out of the skin and press the meat onto one side of the bagel, leaving a gap along the opening.

Place the bagel, sausage side down, in a large nonstick skillet and heat over medium-low heat for one minute.

Crack the egg into the hole, season with a pinch of black pepper, then add a splash of water to the pan and cover with a lid. Let the pan fry for eight minutes or until the sausage is crispy.

Remove the lid and coarsely grate half of the cheese over the top. Then flip the bagel over with a spatula.

Grate the remaining cheese onto the sausage, put the lid back on the pan and cook covered over low heat for another four minutes, or until the cheese has melted. Serve with tomato ketchup and/or brown sauce.

Simple replacements

You can also replace the bagel with a bun or a piece of bread, but make sure to make a hole in the middle.
