Jakob Ingebrigtsen broke the 28-year-old 3,000-meter world record at the Silesia Diamond League, while Mondo Duplantis broke his pole vault record again.

Ingebrigtsen crossed the finish line on Sunday with a breathtaking time of 7:15.77, more than three seconds faster than the record set by Kenyan Daniel Komen in 1996.

The 23-year-old Norwegian won gold in the 5,000m at the Paris Olympics earlier this month after finishing a disappointing fourth in an attempt to defend his 1,500m title.

But his run in Poland, with which he has already set his world records over 2,000 m and 1,500 m indoors, confirmed his superiority in the middle-distance races when he left Ethiopian Berihu Aregawi behind in the last lap.

“It’s a special, incredible feeling,” Ingebrigtsen said, according to Reuters. “I was hoping to break the world record here, but because of my training I can never predict exactly what time I can achieve.”

Ingebrigtsen beat the world record by more than three seconds.

“I never thought I could run 7:17. At the beginning the pace was really fast, but then I slowly got into the race and found a good rhythm.

“The 3,000 is a tough distance. After four or five laps you feel the lactic acid, but you have to get going. The conditions were difficult today in the heat, but that’s the same for everyone.”

Duplantis, meanwhile, broke the pole vault world record for the tenth time in his career, just weeks after winning a second Olympic gold medal and setting a ninth world record.

His most recent clearance of 6.26 metres, one centimetre more than his record in Paris, was achieved on his second attempt, with his legs touching the bar as he jumped over it.

“This year I was focused on the Olympics, the record came naturally because I was in good shape,” said the Swede. “So today’s record doesn’t surprise me, but I’m grateful.”

Duplantis takes part in the pole vault event of the Silesia Diamant League.

In Selisia, Duplantis’ biggest rival was American Sam Kendricks, who finished second with a height of six metres.

Both Ingebrigtsen’s and Duplantis’ world records are subject to the ratification process of the World Athletics Association.
