The emergency number 911 can only be dialed in emergencies. But what counts as an emergency?
Jackson Police have arrested Herman Coleman, also known as Herman Arthur Gardner, 31, in connection with the December 2023 beating death of a 1-year-old child.
Police issued a news release Wednesday saying officers from the JPD and the U.S. Marshal Service Task Force arrested Coleman as a suspect in connection with the case. Coleman is charged with felony murder.
Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade had previously stated that Coleman was “in close proximity” to the child shortly before the baby stopped breathing.
On December 21, 2023, JPD and AMR responded to a call in the 3500 block of Sunset Drive at Sunset Apartments, where the toddler was found severely beaten and unresponsive. Wade said the child was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center with “massive injuries and bruising to his body.”
The child, later identified as Protégé Hunter, died at a local hospital.
According to court documents, the affidavit states that the one-year-old child suffered “extensive bruising” to her neck, arm, face, chest, back, ears and buttocks. The text goes on to say that “the baby’s bruising was purple and black” and was visible all over the child’s body.

Police identified Coleman as the boyfriend of the child’s mother, Yolanda Hunter.
Hunter was arrested on December 22, 2023, after turning herself in to authorities. Hunter was initially charged with child abuse, but has since been charged with felony crimes.
