The 2024 Summer Olympics have finally come to an end in Paris and now it’s time to pass the torch to Los Angeles, which will host the international athletics competition in 2028. The United States hasn’t hosted the events since 2002, when the Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City. To celebrate the athletes heading to America in four years, stars from the States partied in the most American way possible, with the help of Tom Cruise. The movie star performed an epic stunt in Paris to wave the Olympic flag. I’ve watched it over and over again, but other than that, many on social media are focused on another part of the moment.
If America does something, it will be something big. For those who missed it: Mission: Impossible Symbol entered Closing ceremony of the Olympic Games stadium by jumping from above attached to a rope. When he landed, he shook everyone’s hand as he made his way to the stage where he received the Olympic flag and then rode away on his motorcycle. The broadcast then switched to footage of the Super shooter Star drives through Paris before boarding a ramp on a plane. The opening ceremony in Paris was fantastic in his own way, but it doesn’t get much more epic than Tom Cruise. A typical American movie star being presented with an Olympic flag is so quintessentially American, and his stunts showed off his own athleticism, so it’s perhaps not hard to see why this whole sequence is so rewatchable. Cruise may have been in the spotlight, but many have focused on singer HER, who absolutely killed a guitar solo while Cruise was performing in Paris. Many fans certainly knew that HER was an incredible singer, with hits like “Could’ve Been” and “Slide,” but many were surprised by how talented she was as a guitarist. The solo was incredible and it didn’t look like she broke a sweat. While Tom Cruise’s stunt performance showed one element of American talent and skill, HER showed another, showcasing the excellent musicianship of American artists to the world. A California native herself, she was an excellent choice to represent her home state at the ceremony. The Grammy winner is also a big reason why this entire sequence was worth watching.
The Olympic Games in Paris were among the best in recent history and offered sporting moments that will be celebrated and repeated for many years to come. There were several celebrities have a lot of fun and cheer for their countryand that number will likely multiply when the competitions are held in LA. The USA ended up taking home more medals than any other country this year, but let’s see if we can continue that streak when the athletes compete in their home country. With talent like Tom Cruise and HER at the helm, anything is possible. And now if you’ll excuse me, I have to watch that massive performance and guitar solo again.
