Is Warner Bros. planning a film based on “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”?

Is Warner Bros. planning a film based on “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”?

Let’s be honest, the answer is probably yes… the idea of a film adaptation of JK Rowling’s stage show Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has surely crossed Warner Bros.’ mind at some point.

After all, the Potter franchise has earned the studio almost $8 billion with eight films.

And the first signs of these intentions may have only just emerged: on July 8 of this year, a trademark was registered for “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

Brian Conroy, a trademark and copyright expert, published his findings on his website (picked up via Hypable).

As you can see from the screenshot (above), Joanne Kathleen Rowling herself owns the copyright to the name “Cursed Child,” which she registered in November last year.

The “Grade 9” part refers to things like “movies” and media content, but how a film would present itself is not clear.

Rowling has previously said that Cursed Child only works as a play and not as a film and should always be viewed as such.

However, it is possible that a filmed version of the stage play will be made and released either theatrically or for the home media market.

It is not yet possible to say whether this will actually happen, but Warner Bros. is clearly playing it safe with this copyright change.

And it’s not like we can’t look forward to some more developments in the Potter film universe in the meantime.

The first film in the series “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” with Eddie Redmayne in the role of the Magi-zoologist Newt Scamander is scheduled to be released in November this year.

Earlier this year it was confirmed that the film would be part of a trilogy. You can watch the trailer for the first film below…
