IOWA CITY – Iowa offensive lineman Cade Borud will be suspended for one game following his July arrest for driving under the influence, head coach Kirk Ferentz said Saturday.

Borud was charged last month after police said he had a breath alcohol concentration of 0.177 percent – more than twice the legal limit. He was said to have “a drunken look and not knowing which street he was on.”

“It’s always unfortunate when a player makes a bad decision,” Ferentz said on Saturday after the team’s public training session. “He regrets it.”

In addition to the one-game suspension, Borud will be on the scout team this week of training and will have to perform community service on Friday and Saturday.

“We all know that the line has been drawn and that double jeopardy will occur in the future,” Ferentz said. “But hopefully we don’t have to go down that path.”

Borud transferred to Iowa from North Dakota as a walk-on earlier this year. Last season, he started all 12 of the Fighting Hawks’ games at center.

He was the second Hawkeye of the summer to face an OWI charge. Wide receiver Kaleb Brown was arrested in late June.

“We had a lot of guys having fun, but you also have to be careful, especially in this day and age,” Ferentz said. “Fortunately, no one was hurt.”
