COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – We spoke exclusively with Muscogee County District Attorney Don Kelly about a letter he wrote regarding a criminal investigation into the city’s finances. He has decided that the office will be removed from the case. “I made the decision that we should remove ourselves from the case to have a neutral party to provide legal advice,” Kelly says. That letter was sent to Peter Skandalakis and Christopher George. We were able to find out that Peter Skandalakis is the executive director of the Georgia State Attorney’s Council. Kelly told us that’s the course of action after the three top city officials came under the microscope of the investigation. “That was the last time we had contact on the matter, after that the State Attorney’s Council will tell us what would be best in this situation,” Kelly says. Although the letter only mentions titles, we know that the finance director is Angelica Alexander and the human resources manager is Reather Hollowell. The letter also mentions a deputy city manager. We have two city managers, but it is unclear which one is involved in the investigation. We reached out to the Georgia Bar Council for comment on the letter and they say, “Chattahoochee County District Attorney Don Kelly has recused his office from investigating Columbus Consolidated Government employees. By law, the PAC’s executive director must appoint a prosecutor to the case. He may assign a private attorney, an elected district attorney, an elected attorney general, the state attorney general or himself to the case. At this time, Mr. Skandalakis has asked his staff to conduct a preliminary investigation into the matter to determine the best course of action.” Kelly says people in Columbus need to know that no charges have been filed yet. “There is no arrest, there is no indictment, no one has been charged with anything, there is simply an ongoing investigation,” Kelly says.
