Spencer Matthews is just one day away from breaking the world record for most consecutive marathons run on sand as part of his epic desert challenge.

The 36-year-old reality star ran 30 desert marathons in Jordan within 30 days, ate a boiled goat’s head and lost a whopping 10 kilos.

Spencer told The Mirror that he felt guided by his late brother Michel on his arduous journey: “Every morning I prayed to Mike.”

Michael Matthews died while climbing Mount Everest in 1999, when Spencer was just ten years old. At 22, he was the youngest Briton to ever reach the summit.

He revealed how he and his team consumed 7,000 calories a day while running through the 40-degree Celsius desert, while camping without toilets or showers, which he described as hellish.

He told the publication: “We felt incredibly uncomfortable the whole time.”

Spencer, a recovering alcoholic, also explained how the challenge helped him deal with the shame of addiction that has followed him since his recovery in 2018.

“I came from a place of being quite ashamed of myself and I think it’s fair to say that I have never been more proud of myself than I am now.”

Last week, during an appearance on Heart FM, he explained how he had lost so much weight: “I’ve lost over 10 stone now. That’s not how I would advise people to lose weight!”

“What we’re doing out here is pretty extreme. Weight loss is certainly not the point, but I burn over 7,000 calories a day, so it’s actually pretty difficult to replace those calories.

“Obviously we’re pretty tired during the day, it’s very, very hot out here, so you’re constantly expending energy. And yes, I mean, I’m a hungry boy and I love my food – but 7,000 calories is pretty tough to replace, so I’m going smaller!”

Spencer continued, “But the body is a really amazing thing. It somehow adapts to where you are, what you’re doing and whatever the circumstances may be.

“I think at this point, after running 24 marathons in a row, my body is like, ‘Jesus Christ, you can just keep going!’ So it’s actually breaking down muscle. I was a lot heavier in the beginning and I lost most of my muscle, so that’s what it is.”

Spencer spoke about the dangers of running through the desert and revealed: “I almost stepped on a horned viper. I don’t want to overdramatize the situation because of course nothing happened, but I didn’t see it.”

“I was following a tire track through the desert, and this thing is pretty well camouflaged, and I accidentally drove over it.”

“The guy behind me, Johnny, noticed and stopped when he saw there was a snake and I turned around and looked at it.

“It turns out that this thing can kill a camel in five minutes and a human much faster. I just want to reiterate that it didn’t attack us or anything like that, so I’m not saying it did that.

“But we were right next to it, I was pretty lucky not to step on it. I literally walked over it, but I didn’t step on it.

“There is no antidote for horned vipers – our doctor has clarified all this – and the local Bedouins like to tell a story from time to time, and they would say something like: ‘If this thing bites you, you’re dead.'”

Spencer is scheduled to complete his challenge on Tuesday – and his family will be there to pick him up.

He has been supported along the way by his family, friends and most recently by Russ Cook, better known as The Hardest Geezer.

If anyone (apart from his fellow runners) knows what Spencer is going through, it’s Russ, who became the first person to cross Africa in April.

With his run, the former Made In Chelsea star is also raising money for Global’s Make Some Noise charity.

Global’s Make Some Noise aims to change lives across the UK by supporting people through bereavement, mental health issues, illness and more, ensuring no one is left alone through life’s toughest challenges.
