Ingebrigtsen and Duplantis break world records in Silesia

Norwegian long-distance star Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis both set new world records at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Silesia on Sunday.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Mondo Duplantis rewrote the history books again on Sunday with two stunning world records in the men’s 3000m run and pole vault at the 12th Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season in Silesia.

Norwegian Ingebrigtsen – reigning Diamond League champion over 1500m and 5000m – was at his best when he clocked a time of 7:17.55 on the Slaski Stadium course, beating Daniel Komen’s previous record, which stood since 1996, by more than three seconds.

“It’s a special, incredible feeling. I was hoping to break the world record here, but because of my training I can never predict exactly what time I can achieve,” admitted Ingebrigtsen, whose jaw dropped as he crossed the finish line. “I didn’t think I could run 7:17 though. At the beginning the pace felt really fast, but then I started to settle into the race and find a good rhythm.”

Duplantis then rounded off the evening with an equally impressive 6.26 m in the pole vault, breaking the world record for the tenth time in his career and the third time this year.

On a historic afternoon, seven more meeting records were set at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, while Femke Bol and Letsile Tebogo both qualified for the Diamond League final in the 400m hurdles and 200m respectively.
