“It’s good that she’s gone, but...”: Indian-American MP on Sheikh Hasina

New Delhi:

Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna said today that the expulsion of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from her country was “good” but the “violence now being directed against Hindus is wrong.”

“Bangladeshi students just raised human rights concerns with Prime Minister Hasina. It’s good that she is gone. But the violence now being directed against Hindus is wrong. Prime Minister Yunus must uphold the rule of law and prevent temples or people of any political party or faith from becoming victims of violence,” Ro Khanna wrote in a post on X today.

Sheikh Hasina, 76, was forced to resign as prime minister on Monday after more than 400 people were killed in a month-long anti-government protest against a public sector job quota.

After her resignation, Ms Hasina left the Bangladesh capital Dhaka for India in a military aircraft. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said yesterday that the government was giving Sheikh Hasina time to “recover” and would inform her of its next steps.

Sources had previously mentioned that she wanted to travel to London and seek asylum, but her son Sajeeb Wazed rejected this request.

The Bangladesh army formed an interim government in the country on Thursday, with Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus as its chief adviser.
