The fans’ favorite Rurouni Kenshin Franchise is back with another season of the hit anime series of the same name, with a special trailer and an official poster released over the weekend. The upcoming season, titled Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Uprising is set to premiere later this year and will see the return of the beloved swordsman of the same name, as the teaser below reveals. Kenshin will be challenged by several new opponents in the fiery new season, which promises that every moment will be as thrilling as ever.

Animated by Liden Films, the Rurouni KenshinThe anime series is the second TV series adaptation of the franchise, after the first in 1996 by Studio Gallop and Studio Deen, which was extremely successful. The franchise in its entirety begins with Nobuhiro WatsukiThe manga series was published from 1994 to 1999. Speaking of the recent return of the anime, Crunchyroll has teamed up with Aniplex to Rurouni Kenshin in North America with a restart from July 2023 and Hideyo Noitamina as director on board.


As a historical adventure series Rurouni Kenshin The focus is on the Ronin Himura Kenshin (voice: Soma Saito in the Japanese version and Howard Wang in the English dub) in the Meiji era in Japan with the official synopsis as follows:

“The Meiji era was a time of great renewal for Japan, when swords and killing were forbidden. Yet many survivors from the revolutionary era still live, lurking in the shadows, waiting for an opportunity to use their deadly blades again. Only Kenshin Himura, once one of the most brutal killers, hopes to preserve his honor as a swordsman and live on in the new era.”


Other “Rurouni Kenshin” productions


In addition to the anime TV series in the Rurouni Kenshin Franchise also has some live-action adaptations, starting with the Keishi Otomo-led Rurouni Kenshin Part I: Originswhich was released in August 2012. This was followed by the 2021 Rurouni Kenshin – The Beginningalso directed by Otomo and ranked third on Collider’s 10 Best Netflix Live-Action Anime Adaptations. Rurouni Kenshin – The Beginning revolves around the foundations of the title character and could be considered the final film in the franchise. It premiered in June 2021.

Rurouni Kenshin – The Finale is another live-action adaptation that is considered one of the best to date. It concluded Kenshin’s story and premiered less than two months before The beginning. This anime film has a commendable critics’ score of 100% and a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 89% thanks to its faithfulness to the manga and high quality.
