How to stay safe on Lake Waco this Labor Day weekend

How to stay safe on Lake Waco this Labor Day weekend

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – With an increase in visitor numbers expected at Lake Waco over Labor Day weekend, park rangers have safety tips for visitors planning to visit the lake.

“We hope they come and celebrate, keeping safety first,” said Cara Neimeitz, ranger at Lake Waco Park.

The most important thing is to wear a life jacket on the water, said Neimeitz.

“Life jackets only work if you wear them and if you wear them correctly,” Neimeitz said. “So make sure that when you’re on the water, your boat has a life jacket for every single person on board.”

The public can rent life jackets at Twin Bridges Park.

When swimming, she recommends using the buddy system to ensure that at-risk swimmers are not alone in the water.

“Use your buddy system, have someone watch the person you’re swimming with,” Neimeitz said. “If you’re a parent, make sure you keep an eye on your kids. Know your swimming abilities.”

She also advised park visitors to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of fluids, and to make sure that the boats used on the lake have enough gas.

“The way the lake has been for the last few months, it’s now open and accessible to the public,” Neimeitz said. “And I’m sure people are ready and eager to get out.”
