TELLER COUNTY – The Teller County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the National Weather Service (NWS) are warning the public about the tornado threat and providing safety guidelines to ensure everyone is prepared.

According to Teller County OEM, there have been seven tornadoes in the county since 2000. The most recent tornado touched down near Cripple Creek on Friday.

In June 2023, a tornado touched down near Pikes Peak.

Although tornadoes are not common, they can occur at higher elevations. According to Teller County OEM, the region’s highest recorded tornado struck the Rockwell Pass area of ​​California in 2004. This area is 12,156 feet above sea level.

Teller County OEM says it is important for residents and visitors to be vigilant, especially during peak tornado season from May to August.

According to Teller County OEM, Colorado sees an average of 53 tornadoes annually, with more along I-25 and in the eastern part of the state.

As a reminder, a tornado warning is issued when conditions are favorable for the formation of a tornado. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been seen or indicated by weather radar.

Below is a list of actions you should take in the event of a tornado:

  • Seek shelter indoors
  • Build as many walls as possible between yourself and the outside world.
  • Avoid mobile homes and prefabricated houses

If you are caught outside, the Teller County OEM recommends getting into a low spot like a ditch and covering your head. They advise avoiding shelter under highway overpasses.
