Hong Kong teenager wins Pokémon GO World Championship – PrestigeOnline Hong Kong

A Pokémon GO A player from Hong Kong just made history by taking first place at the World Championships. 16-year-old Yekai Yekai (Yekai0904) took home the honor after competing in the Pokémon World Finals in Honolulu, Hawaii.

16-year-old Yekai Yekai (Yekai0904) competed against Dutchman Martijn Versteeg (Inadequance) in the Pokémon Worlds Finals in Honolulu, Hawaii. Inadequance’s team consisted of Giratina, Lanturn, Clodsire, Skarmory, Wigglytuff, and Poliwrath, while Yekai0904’s six-person team consisted of Altaria, Skarmory, Lickitung, Charjabug, Shadow Quagsire, and Annihiape.

Although both players seemed to have a similar team composition as both had Skarmory overlap, Yekai0904 had the edge early on as he shielded an Aqua Tail before landing a Stone Edge. Yekai0904 just seemed to be better against Inadequance, who took a risk with the Charjabug while Inadequance relied heavily on his Poliwrath.

In an intense third round, Inadequance was 0-2 down and looked like he would turn the momentum of the game around when he got to 1-2, but he ultimately lost to Yekai0904 1-3. With this win, Yekai0904 went from being a relatively unknown player to one of the most talked about Pokémon GO players after defeating one of the best and taking home the prize money of 156,000 HKD (20,000 USD).
