Hinsdale Little League prepares for its debut in the Little League World Series

CHICAGO (CBS) — Since purchasing a ticket to the Little League World Series, the Hinsdale Little League team has had little free time.

Hinsdale defeats the Little Leaguers from Jasper, Indiana with a walk-off hit in extra innings on Wednesday to win the Great Lakes Region championship and advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Coach Chad Wanless said that after a few days in Williamsport, the team was able to sit back and realize how great their comeback win was and what they had accomplished.

“I think we’re finally starting to really enjoy it a little bit,” Wanless said.

This is the first Little League World Series for Hinsdale and Wanless said the kids deserve all the recognition.

“They play together. They are incredibly talented. They have worked so hard. They play for each other. They have known each other for a long time and they play for each other,” he said.

Outfielder Michael Kipnis, who scored the tying point against Jasper to send the Great Lakes Region championship game into overtime, described how that decisive at-bat felt.

“I heard the fans and all my teammates cheering me on. I knew I had to get that hit,” he said.

Wanless said it was no surprise that Kipnis scored the equalizer.

“He’s an incredibly powerful kid. I was happy for him, but at the same time we had to overcome that excitement because the game was tied. We still had to go out and play, stay focused and get the win after going into overtime,” he said.

Hinsdale had its first extended practice over the weekend and its first game is scheduled for Friday.

“It’s really an incredible experience. These kids are treated the way they’re treated here. It’s going to be hard to bring them home and integrate them back into normal life. And I think it’s going to be even worse when the fans arrive,” Wanless said.
