Hilo expects thousands for the Sprint World Championship

HILO, Hawaii – Thousands of outrigger canoeists from around the world are expected in Hilo August 13-24 for the International Vaʻa Federation Sprint World Championships.


What you need to know

  • Hawaii Island Police advise motorists to drive with caution and expect increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic in downtown Hilo, particularly along Kamehameha Avenue near Hilo Bayfront Beach Park and Wailoa River State Recreation Area
  • Parking is available at the Wailoa River State Recreation Area in the field between the Wailoa River and Kamehameha Avenue, with access from Bishop Street.
  • Overflow parking is available at the Afook-Chinen Auditorium on Manono Street.
  • Police are asking the public to avoid the area if they are not attending or viewing the event to avoid traffic congestion.

The International Vaʻa Federation, Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association and Hawaii County are joining forces to welcome over 2,800 paddlers from 27 countries to compete in the championships at Hilo Bayfront Beach Park.

“We are excited to welcome thousands of paddlers and their families to our shores,” Mayor Mitch Roth said in a press release. “Our island is home to some of the world’s best paddlers and we can’t wait to see them shine on the world stage. In true Hawaiian fashion, we look forward to welcoming our guests with open arms while encouraging responsible, safe and respectful visits. Paddling is a cornerstone of our culture and we are confident our community will make this event truly special.”

Event schedule:

  • 13-15 August – Course announcement
  • 15 August – Opening ceremony at 4 p.m.
  • 16-17 August – Elite World Championships and Para Races
  • 18-24 Aug – Club World Championship (24 Aug if necessary)
  • August 20 – Culture Night at Edith Kanakaʻole Multi-Purpose Stadium, 6 to 9 p.m.
  • 23-26 August – Collapse

Hawaii Police advise drivers to drive cautiously and expect increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic in downtown Hilo, particularly along Kamehameha Avenue near Hilo Bayfront Beach Park and Wailoa River State Recreation Area.

Parking is available at the Wailoa River State Recreation Area in the field between the Wailoa River and Kamehameha Avenue, with access from Bishop Street. Overflow parking is available at the Afook-Chinen Auditorium on Manono Street.

The Hawaii Island Police Department will station special forces along Kamehameha Avenue to assist pedestrians throughout the event from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

To avoid traffic congestion, police are asking the public to avoid the area if they are not attending or watching the event.

“We are excited to welcome competitors and canoe racing fans from around the world to enjoy the beautiful Hilo Bayfront Beach Park and all that Hawaii Island has to offer,” said Maurice Messina, Director of Parks & Recreation. “I want to extend a sincere mahalo to our Parks & Recreation staff, our state and county government partners, and the HCRA for their cooperation in preparing for this important international event.”

The last time Hawaii County hosted the IVF World Sprint Championships was in 2004.
