High heat index leads to half-day school holidays in Jackson area

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Temperatures are expected to soar, prompting several Jackson-area counties to plan early dismissals for Tuesday.

The National Weather Service is forecasting high temperatures of 93 degrees in Jackson on Tuesday, August 27, with heat index values ​​as high as 105 degrees. A heat advisory is in effect for Jackson from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday.

These Jackson-area schools are planning half-day classes Tuesday due to extreme heat. The list will be updated if additional closures are announced.

  • Michigan Center Jr./Sr. High School will have a half day for students on Tuesday, the district announced via social media. Because of a bond extension through 2023 that allowed Michigan Center to install air conditioning in Arnold and Keicher, both elementary schools will be open as usual, officials said.
  • Jackson Public Schools. Athletic practices are not canceled, but heat index protocols are in place. A schedule with dismissal times for each building is available on the district’s Facebook page.
  • Hillsdale Community Schools close at 11 a.m.
  • Jonesville Community Schools close at 11:20 a.m.
  • East Jackson Community Schools close at 12:00 and 1:00 p.m.
  • Vandercook Lake Public Schools close at 11:00 a.m. and 11:55 a.m.
  • Napoleon Community Schools will close at 10:54 a.m., 11:04 a.m. and noon. Middle school sports practices are canceled. High school athletes should talk to their coaches, officials said.
