High-flying scooter twins from Arizona secure spots at World Skate Games in Italy

QUEEN CREEK, AZ (AZFamily) — Kade and Liam Keffer know the image that comes to mind when you hear the word “scooter.”

“(People) think something like, ‘Oh, I had a Razor scooter when I was a kid…'” Kade says.

When you watch the 15-year-old identical twins from Queen Creek perform flips, 360-degree jumps and a host of other tricks, that opinion quickly changes.

“Especially on big ramps, people can do crazy things,” says Kade. “Most people are pretty amazed when they see the tricks.”

The Keffer twins will show off some of those tricks this September at the World Skate Games in Rome, where they are two of four juniors qualified to represent the United States.

The World Skate Games will host the world championships in skateboarding, inline skating and scootering. 12,000 athletes and coaches from 100 countries as well as tens of thousands of fans are expected.

“Most of the scooter scene is in Europe right now,” says Kade. “So all the really good riders will be in this competition. We’ve been following them for, I don’t know, two years, and just seeing their clips is insane. So seeing them in person will be a pretty surreal experience.”

Liam adds that he is looking forward to the competition. “Seeing everyone we’ve been watching on Instagram and YouTube all the time, but (also) the food. My boyfriend was (in Italy) not too long ago and he kept saying how good the pizza and pasta was,” he said.

This is the Keffers’ first trip abroad, but they don’t expect it to be their last. The boys hope that scooter riding will soon become an Olympic discipline.

If you would like to support the family, there is a GoFundMe page in memory of her father, who tragically passed away a year ago.
