FALL RIVER — There was a record number of votes in the Herald News Summer series to see which all-time athlete achieved Mount Rushmore status in the fall election campaign in the Fall River area.

Over 281,000 votes were cast in the fall for the best athletes in eight different sports, with football receiving the most votes with a total of 77,380 votes. There were close races across the board and a few surprises.

The results are in and here are the people readers in the Greater Fall River area chose as their winners:

The winner of the football poll was Joseph Case running back Adam Silva, who defeated Durfee lineman Tim White. Silva received a total of 39,373 votes (50.88%) to finish in first place. White received 44.11% of the vote (34,132 votes). Somerset Berkley running back Rick Kowalski finished in third place (2.94%).

The winner of the boys soccer poll was Rui Almeida of Westport with a total of 4,941 votes (39.02%). Carlos Couto of Diman took second place (26.90%), while Andrew Sousa of Durfee took third place (11.59%).

Samantha Borges of Somerset Berkley won the girls soccer poll in the closest race of any sport. Borges received a total of 24,810 votes (35.31%) to finish in first place. Tiffany Correia of Durfee finished in second place with 24,690 votes (35.14%). Beth Messier of Joseph Case (11.15%) took third place.

In the golf poll, AJ Guidotti surprised favorite Jim McDermott of Somerset Berkley, taking first place with 9,541 votes (41.14%). McDermott received 34.06%, while Paul Saunders of Durfee (12.42%) took third place.

Case graduate Megan Smith was the clear winner of the field hockey poll with a total of 20,917 votes (48.54%). Case graduate Emily Halkett took second place (19.06%), while Somerset Berkley’s Lucas Crook took third place (10.13%).

Durfee’s Andrea Costa emerged as the winner of the girls volleyball poll with 8,563 votes (43.55%). Fellow Hilltopper Stephanie Valente took second place (32.61%). Case’s Jamie Moniz followed with a third place finish (14.49%).

Mike Hallal of Case was the winner of the boys cross country poll with 42.22% of the vote. Ronnie Ferreira of Durfee was second (16.11%) and Phil Lussier of Somerset Berkley was third (10.56%).

Sheela Agrawal of Case came from behind to beat Maggie Connell of Durfee in the girls cross country voting. Agrawal took first place with a total of 20,185 votes (57.96%). Connell came in second (37.95%) and Susan Rotsky of Somerset Berkley (1.98%) took third.
