Michael Henriquez’s right arm spoiled a good performance for the Washington County All-Stars.

Henriquez, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound right-hander, allowed just three hits and two unearned runs in 6 1/3 innings to lead Bronx, N.Y., to a 5-3 victory over Washington County in the Pony League World Series on Sunday.

“That’s a typical performance from him,” Bronx assistant coach Jeffrey Gutierrez said. “He told me (Saturday) night that he wanted the ball. He wanted to shoot. I love when kids do that.”

Washington County was the last club in the 10-team field to make its debut in the series. If the host team wants to make it to the championship game again this year, it will have to win a series of elimination games, starting Monday (12:30 p.m.) against Bay County, Michigan.

The Bronx, which has a record of 2-0, plays against Tijuana, Mexico (1-0) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Washington County made the game very exciting early in the seventh inning, scoring two runs on singles by Landon Conn (2-for-3) and Coen Phasupong, combined with two errors by the Bronx. Washington County had the potential tying point when Bronx relief pitcher Misael Acosta induced a flyout that ended the game.

Acosta scored the first run for Bronx in the second inning and hit a solo home run in the third.

It was a game of missed opportunities for Washington County. The team managed to get its first batter on base four times, but only managed to score one run.

“We didn’t hit the ball in time,” complained Washington County Manager Andrew Wuenstel. “We only struck four times, and if you don’t strike, you have a chance to win, but we didn’t find any holes.”

The hard-throwing Henriquez managed two walks and four strikeouts.

Washington starter Logan DiSilvestro allowed three runs and four hits in 3 2/3 innings, but his performance was better than the numbers. He left the game with two outs in the fourth inning and his team trailing 3-1 while the Bronx was ready to send leadoff batter Angel Garcia to the field.

“We took Logan out because I didn’t want him to face the top players in their lineup three times,” Wuenstel explained. “We’ve been watching them and we know the top players in their lineup hit well, so we wanted to give them a different face.”

Washington County took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Landon Trnavsky worked a walk, advanced to second on a missed throw, and then to third on a rebound by Tristian Coney. Trnavsky attempting to advance from second to third on a ground ball in the left side of the infield was a risky move, but it paid off one batter later. Then Conn hit a pop-out to second baseman Erick Nunez in shallow right field. Trnavsky wasn’t trying to tag out on that play, but the Bronx still fired the ball to home plate. It sailed over catcher Jeremias Perez’s head, allowing Trnavsky to run home and score the game’s first run.

Bronx took a 2-1 lead in the third when Garcia hit a double that scored Acosta and Justin Hernandez.

Acosta’s home run just inside the left field line made it 3-1 and the Bronx scored two more runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Puello and a double steal.

“We have a long way to go,” Wuenstel said. “We have to come back and be prepared to win every pitch. Don’t think about what happened in the past and don’t think too far into the future.”
