Helena Bonham Carter, known for her roles in The Lone Ranger And A lifehad the most fun shooting a particular scene with Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potterdespite the challenges. Carter had a surprising amount of fun portraying the fearsome Bellatrix Lestrange, especially with her younger co-stars. Despite her veteran status, she was treated like a teenager on set and she loved every moment of it.

Filming with a wand wasn’t as easy as it looked. The 58-year-old actress revealed that waving a stick around while pretending to cast spells felt pretty weird at first. She took wand waving seriously, attending “wand school” for weeks and even getting a blister from all the practice.

The wand work was based on fencing techniques, complete with Latin names for the moves. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Carter talked about it:

We went to wand school for about three weeks. We took it very, very seriously. I actually got a wand blister on my (middle) finger. They kind of had different names for the different movements, Latin ones. It was kind of based on fencing. You always have to have an intention behind the spell too.

Carter joined the Harry Potter Franchise somewhat randomly, but. She first appeared in Order of the Phoenix—and was excited to step into Bellatrix’ shoes after the original choice had to drop out. Her passion for magic and witches made the role the perfect choice, as she revealed:

So they came to me. And I loved it. I love magic, I love witches and I love the whole (Harry Potter) world. I was over the moon to play a witch.

A standout moment was when she got to impersonate Emma Watson’s Hermione Granger. Instead of putting on a lot of makeup, Carter got the chance to impersonate Hermione, which gave her role a fun twist. Her younger co-stars, including Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, treated her like a teenager, which made the experience even more enjoyable for Carter. The actress told MTV News (via Contact Music):

Instead of putting a huge amount of makeup on Emma Watson, they just said, “Now act like Hermione.” It was funny. I saw Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint and they treated me like I was 17.

At the end of Helena Bonham Carter Harry Potter The adventure was a mix of wand-wielding challenges and unexpected teen antics. From feeling like a veteran on set to transforming into Hermione on screen, Carter’s journey was as enchanting as her character’s magic skills.
