Haunted house returns to old Joliet prison – Shaw Local

Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group will reopen its Old Joliet Haunted Prison on September 13th.

Tickets for the haunted house in the old women’s prison at the former Joliet Correctional Center are now on sale.

Thirteenth Floor has been operating a haunted house at Old Joliet Prison during the Halloween season since 2021.

The Denver, Colorado-based operator of haunted houses across the country also operates the 13th Floor Haunted House Chicago in Schiller Park.

According to a press release from Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group, tickets for both locations start at $19.99.

The haunted house in Joliet will include elements that address the history of the prison and the criminals imprisoned there along with their victims.

This includes:

• “Carnage in Cell Block 13,” in which notorious child murderers Nathan Leopold Jr. and Richard Loeb are animated for what Third Entertainment Group calls “fighting bloodthirsty corpses”

• “Inmates Row,” which, according to a press release from 13th Floor Entertainment, is “filled with toxic zombies and gruesome remains of previous victims”

•“Zombie Laser Tag” challenges teams to fight through a horde of zombies armed with laser tag guns, the press release said.

“Given the rich history of disturbing stories, Chicagoans are invited to explore the new attractions at Old Joliet Haunted Prison for themselves,” said the press release from 13th Floor Entertainment.

This will be 13th Floor Entertainment’s fourth Halloween season, operating a haunted house in the former prison.

The Joliet Area Historical Museum manages the former Joliet Correctional Center, which it has renamed the Old Joliet Prison, as a tourist destination and event venue. The City of Joliet has a lease on the property, which is owned by the State of Illinois.

The prison was closed in 2002, but reopened by the city of Joliet for tours and events.

Other highlights at the Old Joliet Haunted Prison this year include: mini escape games, a “Neon Cowboy Secret Bar,” a “Shriekeasy Secret Bar,” and a “Behind the Screams Tour.”
