Harry Potter star James Phelps broke the director’s ribs during filming

During the filming of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” James Phelps accidentally broke the director’s ribs.

The 35-year-old actor, who starred in the fantasy blockbusters alongside his twin brother Oliver as George in the role of Fred Weasley, injured Mike Newell in a mock brawl during the filming of the fourth film in the series.

The 79-year-old filmmaker recalled: “We were shooting the scene where Fred and George are not allowed to take part in the Triwizard Tournament. We were wearing wigs and beards of people who looked like old men, and Mike said, ‘Okay, I think you’re going to get on each other’s nerves, I think you should have a proper argument about this.'”

In HBO’s special “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts,” celebrating the release of the first film based on acclaimed author JK Rowling’s bestselling books, Mike explained that he intervened to encourage the boys to fight, which caused him great pain.

He said: “The two of them were kind of joking around and I said, ‘No, come on guys, it’s a fight.’

“I was a fat 60-year-old man at the time and I really shouldn’t have done it.

“I remember grabbing him around the waist and trying to throw him around and so on, and I broke a couple of ribs.

“From then on I suffered terribly from the pain, but the nice thing was of course that I had completely embarrassed myself and everyone felt much better because of it.”
