“My confidence and everything else was at an all-time low,” he said.

“All of these friends could have supported me, but I blocked them out. I didn’t want them to see how deep I was going. I didn’t want them to see me through different eyes. It was the worst thing I could have done because they could have been there for me.

“It was something that was eating away at me.”

The 27-year-old, who was 12 when he first appeared in the Harry Potter films, spoke about having suicidal thoughts earlier this year.

“I was at the end of my rope. I felt like I had let my parents down, that I couldn’t do anything right, that I was worthless, just a disaster,” he said.

“In April I was standing in a barn where I had cleaned out the horses’ stalls and put them out to pasture. I had a rope with me. I threw it over one of the railings in the barn. And I was about to hang myself… I had thought about it before, but never got to the point where I had everything prepared.

“I texted my mom and dad. I can’t remember exactly what I said to them, but I asked for help without really asking for help.

“I was devastated. I told them how sorry I was for everything I had done, everything I had messed up. I felt like I was ruining their lives. I apologized for everything, and they must have known something was wrong.

“I deeply regret not saying what I felt when I was 16. Harry Potter was the best thing in my life, but in some ways it also became the worst time of my life.”

The low points coincided with a court case against his former manager, which saw Murray ordered to pay £210,000 in unpaid fees in April this year.

Murray tweeted about his struggles with depression to his 224,000 followers on October 10, World Mental Health Day, and received widespread support from his fans.
