HALF-TIME REPORT: Red Bull – Can the champions fend off a growing group of challengers as big names prepare to exit?

Red Bull started the 2024 season in style with five wins in the first seven races, but the result has been reduced to just two in the final seven races as McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes pile pressure on the reigning world champions, who will soon lose their loyal regular drivers Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley from their ranks. Here’s a look back at the team’s recent title defence, with 14 of 24 scheduled races completed…

Despite the hype off the track, Red Bull’s start to 2024 has been almost flawless on the track, with Max Verstappen picking up where he left off at the end of last year and most of his rivals fearing a relatively smooth run to his fourth consecutive title.

In fact, the Dutchman showed his dominance in the first half of the race, winning five of seven races. And he has a good chance of increasing his tally even further: a brake failure in Australia and an unfavorable safety car phase in Miami cost him the chance of further glory.

However, despite a more challenging series that began in Monaco and exposed Red Bull’s continued weakness on tight, twisty tracks, Verstappen was able to take ‘only’ two more wins as McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes became real threats at the front of the field.
