Guerriers takes part in the U20 World Athletics Championships

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Twin sisters in their second year of study Gloria Guerrier (West Hempstead, New York) And Victoria Guerrier (West Hempstead, New York) of the Yale women’s track and field team will compete for Haiti this week at the U20 World Championships in Lima, Peru. Gloria will run the 400m hurdles and Victoria will run the 800m.

The U20 World Championships, formerly known as the Junior World Championships, are held every two years. This year they will take place from August 27 to 31. It is the 20th edition of the championship and it includes 1,700 athletes (22 Olympians from the Paris Games) from more than 130 teams.

Gloria Guerrier was awarded the Yale team’s Outstanding Newcomer Award last year. She broke Yale’s school record in the indoor 500 meter dash with a time of 1:12.41 and now ranks fourth all-time for Yale in the indoor 400 meter dash with a time of 55.86. Her time of 59.64 in the outdoor 400 meter hurdles is the third best time ever for Yale.

Victoria Guerrier capped off her stellar debut season for Yale on May 23 in the first round of the NCAA East, where she placed sixth in her 800m race with a time of 2:06.97. She won the Yale team’s James Stack ’61 Award, given annually to the track and field athlete who best embodies Jim Stack, the captain and leader of the 1961 team that won the “big three”: the heptagonal and IC4A championships. She immediately etched her name in Yale’s record books, as her indoor 500m time (1:13.56) and indoor 800m time (2:08.10) both rank fourth at Yale. Outdoors, she ranks third with her 800m time (2:04.93) and fifth with her 400m time (55.51). With this 800 m time, she ranks 16th among the 44 athletes who took part in this competition at the U20 World Championships.

In addition to their success at Yale last year, the Guerriers also competed in the CARIFTA Games, representing Haiti at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada. There, Victoria placed second in the U20 800m final on April 1 with a time of 2:07.45. Gloria placed fourth in the U20 400m hurdles final on March 31 with a time of 1:01.45.

Victoria then competed in the Jamaica U20 Championships at the National Stadium in Kingston that summer, recording a time of 2:07.38 in the 800m.

The Guerriers both graduated from West Hempstead Secondary School.
