Gravitas Ventures secures US and Canadian rights to “Another Happy Day”

Independent film distributor Gravitas Ventures has acquired the US and Canadian rights to “Another Happy Day,” written and directed by Nora Fiffer. The comedy, starring Lauren Lapkus, Marilyn Dodds Frank, Jean Elie and Carrie Coon, is set to be released on October 1 as digital video-on-demand on cable television.

The film’s logline states: “Desperate for companionship, young mother Joanna falls into an unlikely friendship with her estranged aunt Miriam, a reclusive actress. Miriam seems the perfect companion for Joanna: she’s artistic, honest, eccentric and hates babies. But everything goes haywire when Joanna tries to care for her aunt instead of her baby. ‘Another Happy Day’ is an absurd, suspenseful comedy that explores postnatal depression, intergenerational friendship and the meaning of family.”

Mike Castle, Francis Guinan, Hanna Dworkin, Alex Weisman, Bryan Coffee, Adam Poss, Nora Fiffer, Jessie Holder Tourtellotte and Tim Kazurinsky complete the cast.

According to Gravitas Ventures, the film was directed by a team of mothers, the production emphasized eight-hour workdays and made parental childcare a central focus of budget and fundraising efforts.

“‘Another Happy Day’ is the movie I wish I had seen before I became a mother,” Fiffer said in a statement. “It’s a funny, deep and tender film about a young mother who is not good at being a new mother. The story deals with the surreal period after giving birth, the kind of postnatal depression that is easy to overlook.”

The film was produced by Tourtellotte, Fiffer and Quin Nicholson. Coon, Lapkus, Eugene Sun Park, Chris Anderson, Anna Von Mertens and Howard and Bev Rossman served as executive producers.
