Governor Youngkin issues statement on killing of Smyth County deputy

Governor Glenn Youngkin released a statement Sunday regarding the death of Deputy Hunter Reedy of the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Reedy was killed in the line of duty and another deputy, Michael Fedorchuk, was injured when a North Carolina man apparently opened fire during a traffic stop.

We ask that everyone please keep in prayer and support the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Hunter Reedy, who was tragically killed in the line of duty. It is a powerful reminder that our law enforcement heroes risk their lives every day and his courage and commitment to protecting and serving the Smyth County community will never be forgotten. Suzanne and I are so grateful for the support being shown to Deputy Reedy’s family. We continue to pray for the speedy and full recovery of Deputy Fedorchuk, who was also struck by gunfire in the same incident. During this difficult time, we stand united in support of our entire law enforcement community and their families.

Governor Youngkin also ordered that flags be flown at half-staff on the day of Congressman Reedy’s memorial service so that the state could “honor his service and sacrifice.”
