Governor Pritzker speaks on second day of DNC; several people arrested during protests in Chicago on Monday

The Democratic National Convention begins its second day on Tuesday and has the theme “A bold vision for America’s future.” At least four people were arrested during the protests and demonstrations on Monday in front of the United Center.

This number could rise today if the authorities provide an update.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m., part of the security fence along the route of the protest march was torn down and some protesters began to enter through the gap in the fence.

By this time, the official protest had already progressed, but one group remained behind and broke through the fence. This group made it through the first line of the perimeter and attempted to break through the second fence, which would allow them access to the United Center.

This happened near Washington Boulevard and Wolcott Avenue, two blocks north of the United Center.

The Democratic National Convention’s Joint Public Safety Information Center issued a statement Monday evening saying the internal security perimeter had never been breached by the troublemakers before.

“On August 19, protesters breached a portion of the barrier fence along the outer grounds of the Democratic National Convention near the United Center. Police officers were immediately on site and were able to bring the situation under control. At no point was the inner grounds breached and there was no danger to the people being protected.”

On the first day of the Democratic National Convention Activities around the Loop were remarkably quiet outside the convention area on the west side.
