The state apparatus must act quickly and at many levels to deal with the disasters, said a government official whose attention is also focused on the consequences of the devastating forest fires.

Once the fire is extinguished, teams will be deployed to document the damage and provide the first compensation to meet the most urgent needs of those affected. In addition, initiatives will be launched for the flood protection projects necessary after forest fires and for the clearing of the burned areas.

After it became clear that firefighters and crisis management forces were battling the most difficult fire of the summer – Attica was once again the epicenter – Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis returned to Athens on Sunday and visited the Operations Center of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection on Monday morning to learn about the current situation.

Meanwhile, SYRIZA and PASOK said the top priority now was to put out the fire. “At the moment, firefighting is the priority, but tomorrow we finally need a national plan to prevent the climate crisis,” said PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis.
