Good Samaritans rescue South Haven man from sinking truck in Kalamazoo River

DOUGLAS, Michigan – A man was rescued before his pickup truck sank in the Kalamazoo River Thursday afternoon.

According to the Douglas Police Department (DPD), officers responded to the area of ​​Bluestar Highway and Washington Street before 12:45 p.m. on a report of a vehicle that had struck a utility pole and left the road.

We were told a large pole was knocked down and several power lines were hanging across the road. For the public’s safety, officers cordoned off the area by parking their patrol cars around it. They then went down to the Kalamazoo River where they found a sinking 2008 Chevy Silverado.

With the help of passersby, the officers reached the truck in a pontoon boat. According to DPD, a citizen who was standing on the loading area of ​​the truck smashed the rear window and pulled the 55-year-old driver out.

The truck disappeared under water shortly afterwards.

Police say the driver, a South Haven resident, was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries. One of the assisting citizens was privately transported for a minor ankle injury.

According to DPD, alcohol was not involved in the incident. The incident is currently under investigation.
