Good Samaritan shoots man trying to kidnap woman with child in car

FALLS MILLS, Va. (WVVA/Gray News) – Virginia authorities say a Good Samaritan helped stop a carjacking involving a mother and her child on Friday.

According to the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office, the situation occurred around 1 p.m. at Lee’s Kar-Go supermarket.

Authorities said a man, later identified as 30-year-old Cody Dailey, attacked a female driver and attempted to steal her truck with her child inside.

Witnesses heard the woman’s screams and came to her aid. One of them was armed with a pistol.

The armed man approached Dailey and ordered him to stop, but the suspect eventually attacked him and pushed him to the ground.

According to authorities, the man then shot Dailey in the chest.

Police responded after hearing the gunshot while working to handle another incident nearby.

“Thank God for the Good Samaritans who came to the aid of the victims in their time of need. We are grateful for their desire to intervene on their behalf. Had they not acted, the outcome could have been very different,” said Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt.

Dailey was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital, where his vital signs were stable, according to police.

The sheriff’s office said there were two warrants out of Tazewell County District Court for the 30-year-old suspect.

According to investigators, Dailey is facing charges including kidnapping, car theft and assault in connection with Friday’s incident.

The Good Samaritan was not immediately identified by the Sheriff’s Office.
