Good Samaritan says she heard child screaming during attempted kidnapping in Vancouver

Vancouver Police are looking for a suspect in the attempted kidnapping of an 11-year-old in broad daylight.

According to Vancouver police officials, the incident occurred on Sunday, August 18, at 3:40 p.m. after an unknown man attempted to abduct a child at Lieser Crest Park on Virginia Lane.

According to police, the suspect is described as a white male, 5’8″ tall, weighing about 130 pounds, possibly with a short beard and tattoos on his face, hands and possibly stomach. He was wearing a black hoodie, black basketball shorts with red sides and dark shoes.

“We live in a very safe community and I think normally everything is fine, but until we can identify and arrest the suspect, we are urging the community to be extra cautious when children are outside,” Sergeant Julie Ballou of the Vancouver Police Department said in an interview with KATU.

“It’s really disturbing all around,” Ballou added. “It’s a nice residential area. I think overall it’s a nice day, it’s quiet, I think the child was the only one in the park at the time, and I think the suspect may have been trying to take advantage of an opportunity.”

According to Ballou, a Good Samaritan intervened and stopped the kidnapping attempt. The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, told KATU she heard “screaming” coming from the park and that’s when she knew something was wrong.

“I stopped what I was doing and walked to the end of my driveway and listened a little more to see if the screaming continued, which it did,” she said. “I walked a little further into the street, walked toward the park and listened to what she was actually saying. I almost thought she was hurt and wasn’t really sure what was going on.

“I saw two people standing there, a little girl and then just a larger male figure wearing a hoodie.”

Police are currently trying to determine who this man is. If you have any information about this case, please contact Detective Nicholson at [email protected] and or Detective Dewey at [email protected].
