Good old Gollie Tamales takes root in Van Alstyne

Good old Gollie Tamales takes root in Van Alstyne

VAN ALSTYNE, Texas (KXII) – Downtown Van Alstyne just got a little tastier.

North Texas brothers Mike and Vincent Holmes put a unique twist on the traditional tamale at their own Good Gollie Tamales on Main Street.

“It just feels good and is kind of overwhelming,” said Vincent Holmes, owner of Good Gollie Tamales.

The Holmes brothers’ parents owned a small family restaurant and when the time came to pass the baton, the duo decided to take the recipes with them on the road.

They began making and delivering tamales throughout Texas and Oklahoma, and along the way they brought the taste as far as California and Alaska.

They’ve also spiced up the menu with some original tamale variations, including a breakfast tamale and a Cajun jambalaya tamale.

“My mom had made jambalaya and we were eating it as I walked through the kitchen,” Holmes said. “She asked, ‘What do you think if I put this in a tamale,’ and I said that would be crazy, and it was crazy.”

As their mobile business grew, so did the need for their own premises.

They finally decided that downtown Van Alstyne was the right place.

“It got to the point where customers almost forced us to open a store,” Holmes said.

Good Gollie Tamales held its soft opening event on Saturday, with the grand opening in two weeks.

Until then, the brothers have only one message for Texoma.

“Come and try what you asked for,” Holmes said. “We have you, we love you, we value you, and we will keep it authentic.”
