The Yankees faced the Washington Nationals on Monday night to open a three-game series. After a series sweep of the Colorado Rockies over the weekend, the Bombers emerged victorious from Game 1 against Washington, winning 5-2.
The Nationals offer the chance to set yourself apart
The Nationals are another team that is under .500 this season. They are an easier opponent for the Yankees and a prime opportunity to extend their lead in the American League East. On Monday night, the Yankees had a two-game lead over the Orioles, who had the night off. Plus, the Orioles just lost one of their best young hitters, Ryan Mountcastle, to the injured list due to a sprained wrist.
Solid performance from Nestor Cortes and the defense
The Yankees benefited from a strong defensive effort and a solid outing from left-hander Nestor Cortes. Cortes, who has a 3.89 ERA this season, pitched 6.2 innings in the win, allowing just one earned run, four hits and strikeouts, and managing four strikeouts.
Key defensive plays by Aaron Judge and Alex Verdugo helped stifle Washington’s offensive efforts. Most notably, Judge prevented a home run by Andres Chaparro, a former Yankees talent who now plays first base for the Nationals.
Bullpen makes the deal perfect
The bullpen also played a crucial role in the win. Jake Cousins and Clay Holmes combined for 1.2 scoreless innings to close the game. However, Mark Leiter Jr., who was recently acquired at the trade deadline, allowed a solo run and was replaced before the end of the inning.
Offensive shines with power demonstration
Offensively, the Yankees posted an impressive 12 hits with seven strikeouts, including three home runs. Austin Wells, Gleyber Torres and Jazz Chisholm each hit a home run. The standout player, however, was Anthony Volpe. The second-year shortstop recorded three hits, including a hustle double that resulted in a collision with CJ Abrams’ knee. Despite missing several minutes, Volpe managed to stay in the game and finish strong.
Yankees aim for series victory
The Yankees are on a solid streak, winning five of their last six games. A win over the Nationals would give them a significant advantage in the division. Gerrit Cole will face Patrick Corbin on Tuesday. Cole has been excellent lately, posting a 3.72 ERA, while Corbin, who has lost 12 games this year with a 5.73 ERA, offers the Yankees a great opportunity to put on an offensive showcase.
