Giants take Ethan Small off the injured list

The Giants have reinstated the left-hander Ethan Klein from the 60-day injured list and sent him to Triple-A Sacramento, according to the transaction tracker on MLB.com. San Francisco moved Wilmer Flores from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL to clear the needed spot on the 40-man roster. Flores suffered a knee injury and will not return this season.

Small spent the entire season on the injured list after suffering an oblique strain in spring training. It was a rough start to his time in San Francisco, about six weeks after the Giants acquired him from the Brewers in a cash deal. Small began a rehab period in the Arizona Complex League on July 16. He pitched three times there and once in Low-A before being dealt to Sacramento, where he threw five innings in six appearances. Small allowed six runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Pitchers are only allowed to spend 30 days in a rehab assignment, so the Giants had to activate Small today. They will keep him in Triple-A in his final option year if he spends at least 20 more days in the minors. Small, a former first-round pick by Milwaukee, has spent the majority of the past two seasons in Triple-A. He worked as a starter in 2022 before kicking into the bullpen a year ago, posting a 3.18 ERA in 51 innings. His major league resume consists of four games (two starts) between 2022 and 2023.
