Daniel Jones was back on the field for the New York Giants. This was good news as he recovered from a torn ACL.

The results? Well, it’s a good thing it’s only the preseason.

Jones’ first pass probably should have been intercepted by Houston Texans cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. On the Giants’ second series, Jones threw one of the worst interceptions ever seen in the preseason or regular season.

Jones was under pressure and was close to a sack and a safety when he blindly threw to his left. It was an easy pick-6 for Texans safety Jalen Pitre.

On the next series, Jones threw a deep pass that was intercepted by Stingley. Two interceptions in one quarter and another pass that could have been intercepted is not the result the Giants expected.

And again, it’s good that it doesn’t count.

Jones can be forgiven for being a little rusty. He’s recovering from knee surgery and didn’t play in last week’s preseason game. But it’s also a crucial season for Jones. The Giants were looking to move up in the NFL Draft and likely draft Jones’ replacement. They didn’t sign anyone other than Drew Lock, giving Jones a season to establish himself as the Giants’ future quarterback. Not that preseason carries much weight in big-picture decisions, but seeing him off to such a shaky start isn’t exactly reassuring.

There were some positive plays. He got rookie receiver Malik Nabers his first NFL preseason catch after two incomplete passes went his way. Jones ran for 12 yards on one run, which was good to see considering his knee injury last season. It wasn’t all bad. It’s just that the interceptions will undo any progress.

Jones is under a lot of pressure to play well early in the season. The Giants won’t play particularly well with him, although Nabers should help. The Giants will ignore the preseason and see what Jones does in a crucial regular season. It can’t get much worse than Saturday’s performance.
