Giants place pitchers Robbie Ray and Jordan Hicks on the injured list

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The San Francisco Giants pitching staff suffered some major setbacks Tuesday, with left-hander Robbie Ray and right-hander Jordan Hicks being placed on the 15-day injured list.

Ray has a strained left thigh and Hicks has inflammation of the right shoulder. Ray was placed on the injured list retroactively to Monday.

Ray founded the Giants 4:3 defeat to the Seattle Mariners, but had to leave the team before the fourth inning due to a hamstring strain.

“I think he caught it at the right time and didn’t try to overdo it, but thighs are thighs,” San Francisco manager Bob Melvin said before the Giants’ Tuesday night game against the Milwaukee Brewers. “You’re probably going to have to expect at least a couple of weeks.”

Melvin said Hicks has been struggling with shoulder problems for some time.

Hicks, the one Four-year contract worth $44 million with the Giants in the offseason, began the year in San Francisco’s rotation after previously working primarily as a reliever, returning to the bullpen earlier this summer.

“He’s been having shoulder issues,” Melvin said. “He just hasn’t responded right since he’s been in the bullpen. He pitched one game and the next day the shoulder was a little stiff and he wasn’t available. It’s just gotten to a point where we need to get it right. He’s probably going to have to stay on the injured list for a while to get it all right. Hopefully he’ll be much better after that. He’s been dealing with it for a while now.”

Hicks has a record of 4-7 with a 3.90 ERA in 28 appearances this season, including 20 starts.

Ray, who won the 2021 AL Cy Young Award while pitching for Toronto, is 3-2 with a 4.70 ERA in seven starts since returning a month ago from Tommy John surgery. He underwent the surgery in May 2023 and only pitched in one game last year.

This season he has struck out 43 batters in 30 2/3 innings.

In other action Tuesday, the Giants recalled right-handers Austin Warren and Landen Roupp from Triple-A Sacramento and claimed catcher Jakson Reetz off the waivers list and sent him directly to Sacramento.
