Garwo III and Cobb on the list of comeback players of the year

RENO, Nevada – Nevada has placed two players on the preseason watch list for the 2024 Comeback Player of the Year Award, as running back Patrick Garwo III and security Keyshawn Cobb have been provided with tabs.

Since 2018, the award has recognized college football student-athletes who have overcome injury, illness or other circumstances. At the end of each season, a vote by a panel of college football writers, editors and sports information directors will select three college football student-athletes as Comeback Player of the Year winners at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.

Each player will make his Wolf Pack debut this fall. Garwo III spent his first five seasons at Boston College, where he was named to the All-ACC Second Team in 2021. Despite battling injuries that limited his playing time the last two seasons, Garwo rushed for 1,913 yards and 11 touchdowns in his five years (2019-23) with the Eagles and was also named to the All-New England team in 2021 by the New England Football Writers.

For Garwo, this is the third preseason watch list he has been placed on ahead of the 2024 season. He was previously on the lists for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy.

Cobb will also be spending his sixth year at Nevada and comes to Reno after his 2023 season at West Virginia was cut short due to injury. The Warner Robins, Georgia native previously spent the 2022 season in Buffalo, where he started 11 games, led the team in pass breakups (eight) and forced fumbles (three) and finished third on the team with 66 tackles, including 6.0 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks. Prior to joining the Bulls, Cobb was named a Junior College All-American in 2021 at Northeast Mississippi CC, recording 45 tackles with 3.5 TFL, one interception and two forced fumbles.

Nevada will usher in the Jeff Choate era on Saturday, Aug. 24 when it hosts new ACC member SMU at Mackay Stadium at 5 p.m. Choate spent the last three seasons (2021-23) as co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach at Texas, helping the Longhorns to a Big XII title and an appearance in the 2023 College Football Playoff. Prior to his time in Austin, Choate served as head coach at Montana State from 2016-20, leading the Bobcats to two FCS playoff berths, including a run to the semifinals in 2019.

Nevada Football’s “Drive For 25,” a message to Wolf Pack fans to get Mackay Stadium to at least 25,000 in attendance for the Aug. 24 opening game against SMU, continues as 2024 season ticket prices start at just $99 for adults and $60 for children 12 and under. Family four-packs are also available and include four general admission season tickets and free parking for just $400 – a total savings of $200. Three-game mini-plans and single tickets to the Wolf Pack’s seven home games are also available by visiting MyNevadaTickets.com or calling (775) 348-PACK.
